PICKLE FACTORY
Built on the shores of Lake Pepin in the early 1900’s, The Pepin Pickling Company was owned by Ed Theis and his family. Several varieties of pickles and sauerkraut were produced here until they moved their operation to Winona, MN. The building was then used for numerous ventures by different owners.
In 1987 the building was purchased by Wayne and Carol Nelson, and Ralph and Mary Wallin. The building was bought with a restaurant/bar in mind. While many things needed to be remodeled, the ceiling remained the same. In June of 2003, the Nelson’s sold the business and building to Bruce “Wally” and Renee Lohman, Roger and Lisa Anderson.
In 2013, Steve and Marianne Dove assumed ownership of the Pickle where they continued to provide the great food and service the Pickle had long become known for. After a basement renovation in 2017, and 9 years of ownership, the Doves had visions of Fort Myers and the Florida sun in mind, and felt it was time to move into retirement. In March of 2022, the current owner, Paul Wurtz, while having lunch at the Pickle, was so impressed with the service, cleanliness and the overall atmosphere, that he decided to make a career change and purchased the restaurant in July of that year.
Born and raised in Menomonie, WI, Paul graduated from UW-Stout and spent most of his working career in the sales, management, and finance industries. Paul has recently wrapped up a 28-year career of coaching and playing hockey. He continues to work in the mental health field, counseling children and families. Paul has 2 grown children, carries a black belt in Tai Chi, and enjoys playing the guitar. Through his love of music, community, and food, it is Paul’s hope to continue to provide the Pickle experience that customers have grown to love over the years.
The Pickle is currently overhauling the basement bar and patio with the goal of creating an outdoor dining experience that will allow guests to enjoy their favorite beverage and cuisine, while taking in the beautiful view of Lake Pepin.

Discover WIsconsin
Thanks for Discover Wisconsin host Eric Paulson for stopping by the Pickle Factory on his tour down the Great River Road over the summer. As we like to say, it was kind of a big dill to have him and his crew in for a bite and a brew.
